Biography

With nearly a decade of experience in international arbitration, James is a trilingual dispute resolution lawyer who has advised clients on complex commercial, hospitality, IP, M&A, private equity, TMT, and JV/shareholders disputes. He has acted as advocate, counsel and tribunal secretary in international arbitrations under the CIETAC, HKIAC, ICC, LCIA, SHIAC, SIAC, and UNCITRAL Rules subject to a variety of governing laws.

Earlier in his career, James was a Counsel at HKIAC overseeing more than 300 arbitrations with a focus on China-related disputes. As a senior Secretariat member, James played a key role in developing HKIAC's business, policies and practices, from meeting key stakeholders to revising the 2013 HKIAC Rules and contributing to the leading authority on the HKIAC Rules (A Guide to the HKIAC Arbitration Rules (1st Edition)).

James is a regular contributor to the Firm's Global Arbitration News and International Arbitration Yearbook. He has presented at numerous lectures, seminars and conferences on various topics in international arbitration. He is also a listed arbitrator, and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators (HKIArb).

  • Acted for a US-based video game publisher in a mobile game development and publishing dispute (HKIAC Rules).

  • Acted for an Asia-based video game publisher in a mobile game development and publishing dispute under the Expedited Procedure (SIAC Rules).

  • Acted for a licensor in an intellectual property dispute regarding outstanding royalties and unauthorised use of licences (HKIAC Rules).

  • Acted for a Chinese bank’s investment division in a shareholders’ dispute involving outstanding share buy-back and guarantee obligations (HKIAC Rules).

  • Acted for a Hong Kong company in a joint venture dispute concerning the exercise of a put option (ICC Rules).

  • Acted for a Chinese SOE in a joint venture dispute in the automotive industry (ad hoc).

  • Acted for a pharmaceutical company in a M&A dispute involving claims of breach of representations and warranties (ICC Rules).

  • Acted for a luxury hotel group in two parallel arbitrations concerning the wrongful termination of a hotel management agreement (UNCITRAL Rules).

  • Acted for a luxury hotel group in a hotel management dispute in Mainland China (HKIAC Rules).

  • Acted for a Chinese company in a commercial dispute arising out of long-term LPG supply contracts (UNCITRAL Rules).

  • Acted for a Chinese SOE in a commercial dispute arising out of an alumina purchase agreement (UNCITRAL Rules).

  • Acted for a private equity firm in a dispute arising out of a convertible bond subscription agreement (ICC Rules).

  • Acted for a real estate developer in a construction dispute regarding a development project in Mainland China (HKIAC Rules).

  • Acted for a multinational corporation in a construction dispute regarding a mega infrastructure project in South Asia.
