Biography

John is an associate in Baker McKenzie's Intellectual Property and Technology team, based in London. He joined the Firm in 2016 and was admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales in 2018. He is also admitted as an attorney in the state of New York. His practice encompasses aspects of commercial, technology and intellectual property law. He has a particular focus on data protection.

Practice Focus

John advises on a range of UK and EU privacy law issues, including transparency and consent requirements, ePrivacy, data protection impact assessments and data subject rights. He has a particular interest in adtech and works regularly with advertisers, publishers and intermediaries. He has recently been helping clients to assess the data protection implications of Brexit, particularly in relation to international data transfers and determination of lead supervisory authority. Together with Baker McKenzie colleagues, he assists clients in understanding international privacy law developments, including the CCPA, for their European and global operations.

John is also involved in negotiating a range of commercial agreements and advising on ecommerce and consumer law matters. He provides support with the commercial and technology aspects of large corporate transactions. He regularly acts for clients in the new media sector, including platforms, on privacy, consumer and intellectual property law matters. Recently, John has been assisting several clients in assessing the contractual and commercial law implications of proposals for new digital services taxes in various jurisdictions.

  • Advising a travel technology platform on an ongoing basis on various aspects of its business, including marketing, advertising, data protection, intellectual property and consumer law issues.

  • Providing regular strategic commercial and privacy law advice to a major social media platform.

  • Advising a provider of adtech solutions on privacy compliance in respect of several of its product offerings.

  • Assisted a global media company in preparing its GDPR record of processing.

  • Advised several technology companies on a wide range of cutting edge IP product counselling issues.

  • Advised a leading software development company on the data protection implications of its augmented reality platform.

  • Assisted a payment solutions platform with the development of its template agreements with customers and developers.

  • Acted for a multinational telecommunications company in a contractual dispute with a customer.

  • Acted for Equinix Inc. on its USD 1 billion initial joint venture with GIC to develop and operate hyperscale data centres in Europe.

  • Acted for GlaxoSmithKline plc on the sale of its manufacturing site in Cork, Ireland, to Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.
