Hugo I. Lopez Miranda
Biography
Hugo López Miranda joined Baker McKenzie Mexico as a partner in the International Commercial and Trade practice group in the Monterrey office. Hugo is a law professional with over 15 years of experience in customs law, international trade and taxation. He is well-versed in corporate governance and compliance for companies looking to do cross-border business.
Before joining Baker McKenzie, Hugo was responsible for developing the foreign trade area with his previous firm. His practice focuses on providing consulting, regulatory proceedings, and litigation. Hugo works with clients to make their business processes more efficient and cost-effective.
Hugo has served as coordinator of the Foreign Trade Committee of the National Association of Corporate Lawyers (ANADE).
Practice Focus
The focuses of Hugo's practice consist of maquila operations (IMMEX) and other programs for the promotion of imports and exports, tariff classification, rules of origin and verification of origin procedures under Free Trade Agreements, customs valuation, INCOTERMS, as well as non-tariff import regulations such as Mexican Official Standards.
Hugo has extensive experience in advising clients for their day-to-day operations, in corrective and preventive audits, legal defense before courts and regulatory procedures, representing multinational clients across a number of industries including manufacturing, retail and transportation.
Representative Legal Matters
Prior to joining the Baker McKenzie, Hugo handled the following matters:

Advised companies seeking to start operations in Mexico, allowing them to make their operations more efficient and reduce costs through the implementation of Free Trade Agreements and promotion programs (IMMEX, PROSEC).

Representated foreign and domestic clients in origin verification procedures initiated by the Mexican tax authorities, in order to demonstrate the correct application of tariff preferences under Free Trade Agreements (NAFTA/USMCA).

Navigated companies through audits in both administrative proceedings and subsequent litigation stages, achieving the reduction and elimination of important tax assessments.

Provided support to several foreign and domestic companies in investigations initiated by the International Trade Practices Unit (UPCI) on international trade practices in the modalities of dumping and subsidies.
