Biography

Matthew is an associate in the Employment & Compensation Department of Baker McKenzie in London. He joined Baker McKenzie in March 2020 as a trainee solicitor. During his training contract he spent time in Corporate M&A, Employment & Compensation, Corporate Reorganisations, and on client secondment to the Employment Law team of a global financial institution. He subsequently qualified as an associate and was admitted as a Solicitor of England and Wales in March 2022.

Practice Focus

Matthew advises clients on the whole range of employment law issues, with particular experience in large international projects (transactional and non-transactional) as well as domestic litigation and other domestic advisory work. Matthew works across all sectors, but has a particular focus on tech clients, as well as financial institutions and consumer goods.

Representative Legal Matters

Since joining the Employment department, Matthew has worked on a variety of matters including the following:

  • Litigation – assisting in the defence of a wide array of employment litigation for clients in a range of sectors, including experience of practising before appellate courts and preparing for a High Court injunction in respect of unlawful strike action.
  • Corporate transactions – advising on a number of large global corporate transactions including assisting with coordination of the implementation phase of Emerson's USD 14 billion carve out of its Climate Technologies business.
  • Domestic advisory – Providing day to day employment advice to FTSE 100 UK clients, ranging from advice on dealing with BAU employee relations queries to providing in depth advice on implementing new employment legislation and dealing with collective processes such as redundancies and the impact of TUPE.
  • Multijurisdictional projects – Working on coordinating non-transactional multi-jurisdictional projects including global collective redundancies, outsourcing projects, and advising on disciplinary procedures across the globe.
  • Data protection – Assisting clients with responding to complex data subject access requests, as well as advising on other privacy matters such as reviewing privacy policies and privacy notices.
  • EU Whistleblowing Directive – advising global clients on the implementation and impact of the EU Whistleblowing Directive for their business across Europe.
