Biography

Jess is an associate in the Employment Department of Baker McKenzie in London. Jess joined the Firm as a trainee in March 2019. During her training contract, she completed seats in the Pensions, Corporate (Private Equity and Funds), Intellectual Property & Technology and Employment departments. Jess qualified into the Employment Group in March 2021.

Jess was seconded to ByteDance in 2023 as a member of the EMEA Employment Legal team, advising on day-to-day legal employment matters.

Practice Focus

Jess advises global clients on a wide variety of employment law matters across a number of sectors. Most recently, she has been providing support to a global telecoms and infrastructure group in relation to multiple unfair dismissal claims raised in the context of an industrial dispute.

Her practice also focuses on data privacy and day-to-day "general counsel" advice on UK employment matters. She also has experience coordinating multijurisdictional projects across a wide variety of sectors, including technology, IT and financial services.

Representative Legal Matters

  • Providing a wide variety of day-to-day employment advice with a domestic and EMEA-wide focus under a retainer arrangement to a global technology company.

  • Providing support on the strategic and operational HR aspects of the simultaneous purchase, carve-out and divestment of an international construction chemicals business, in compliance with the requirements of competition regulatory authorities in the UK and EU.

  • Advising an international food and agricultural business on the employment aspects of a carve -of its multiple divisions into separate entities as part of a corporate restructuring exercise, and coordinating employment input across multiple jurisdictions.

  • Providing support to a global marketing and data analytics company on the strategic and operational HR aspects of the carve-out and sale of its public division.

  • Advising a large financial institution on a complex tribunal claim involving allegations of sexual harassment and disability discrimination.

  • Advising a multinational IT company on multijurisdictional advice, including a global review of severance packages, and advice on plans for employees to return to the office following the Covid-19 pandemic and testing and vaccination requirements.

  • Advising a software company in relation to a number of UK redundancies as part of a restructuring process, including preparation of materials and negotiation of settlement agreements.

  • Advising a US-based software company on day-to-day employment advice in relation to their UK operations, including preparation of mandatory and recommended policies, disciplinary procedures and terminations.

  • Assisting an international financial services company with an investigation into allegations of misconduct made by a former employee.

  • Assisting an international nuclear power company on its data protection compliance efforts, including proposals relating to employee monitoring.

  • Advising on data privacy issues for a number of clients in the context of investigations, including preparation of data protection impact assessments.

Corporate Responsibility
