Baker McKenzie has successfully assisted URBNSURF develop Sydney's first wave park, after opening Australia's first wave park in Melbourne in 2020. Located just 13 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD, URBNSURF Sydney will be accessible to over 2 million Sydney residents in under 30 minutes at Sydney Olympic Park, Australia’s home of Olympic sport.
Baker McKenzie's Head of Construction, Emanuel Confos stated: "I was first approached to assist at the inception of the project several years back, along with Joshua Hayes Associated, when we prepared and negotiated the construction contract with the civil contractor, the main works contractor and the equipment supplier. It’s a unique development that not only involves a state-of-the-art wave park on a 3.6 hectare site, it also includes a surf academy, swimming pool, health and wellness centre, Rip Curl retail store and food and beverage offerings."
Following the construction of the project, Baker McKenzie Head of Real Estate, Sebastian Busa and Special Counsel, Kerrie Duong commented: "We were delighted to be further engaged on the structuring of its licensing and leasing arrangements with Sydney Olympic Park Authority (as head landlord) and its subtenants, as part of a change to the completion stages of the wave park in Sydney. This strategic advice involved extensive negotiations with all parties in respect of these arrangements and ultimately assisted URBNSURF in successfully opening the park in May 2024."
