Rebecca Thomson
Biography
Rebecca Thomson is a partner and head of Baker McKenzie’s Investigations, Compliance and Ethics practice group based in Johannesburg. She is qualified to practice in South Africa and as a solicitor in England and Wales.
Rebecca was recognised in the litigation category of the Best Lawyers publication in 2019 and 2020.
Practice Focus
Rebecca has experience in a wide range of investigations and commercial dispute resolution. In addition to her experience working as a practicing litigation attorney at both large domestic law firms and global law firms, Rebecca worked as in-house counsel and Africa Leader: Litigation at Deloitte South Africa for four years, giving her unique experience in audit and consulting-related disputes and regulatory investigations, advising multinational audit and consulting firms, and engaging with South Africa's audit industry regulator.
Rebecca also has significant experience in banking and financial-services investigations, regulatory advisory work and litigation, and corporate investigations in both the public and private sectors.

Coordinated and project-managed a global research project for a multinational media conglomerate, together with the Global Fund, on barriers to access to healthcare services for young people across multiple jurisdictions. *

Represented a major international bank on a fraud perpetrated by a derivatives trader through a stock exchange that caused the client to sustain millions of Rands in damages. *

Represented a foreign government on an international investigation to trace and recover money unlawfully transferred from the client’s investment company to various projects and companies all over the world, through a complex set of company structures and schemes. *

Successfully represented a foreign-owned company in arbitration proceedings against a South African commercial bank in respect of a damages claim against the bank. *

Worked with the Gender Equality Commission on opposing an application by the owners of a wedding venue from having certain provisions of the Equality Act declared to be unconstitutional and void, to enable them to refuse to host same-sex weddings (previous firm experience). *
