Biography

Louis Hsieh is a partner at Baker McKenzie's Taipei office and heads the technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT) industry group. He also co-leads the international commerce and trade practice.

His practice areas include capital markets and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). In addition, Louis has extensive experience advising both domestic and international TMT entities on M&A transactions and regulatory matters. He is also experienced in handling data protection, general corporate affairs, competition law, and trade remedies.

Representative Legal Matters

Telecommunication

  • Acted as legal counsel for the purchaser to acquire the trustee-manager of APTT who controls the third-largest multiple-system operator in Taiwan.

  • Represented a Taiwan WiMAX operator before the Administrative Supreme Court and the Administrative High Court for license renewal dispute.

  • Provided legal advise on Taiwan telecommunication regulations with regard to the connected car for one of the major American automotive companies.

Information Technology

  • Acted as legal counsel for a world-leading software manufacturer in its pre-merger filing for a USD 44.6 billion project and successfully obtained approval from the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission.

  • Defended a U.S.-based Fortune 500 information technology company regarding a lease dispute related to its office building in Taipei.

  • Acting as legal counsel for the world's largest computer chip manufacturer, providing regular consultation on developments and updates of the Taiwan Fair Trade Law.

Financial Institutions

  • Acted as legal counsel for a U.K.-based commercial bank to sell its retail securities business to a Taiwan local securities firm. 

  • Acted as legal counsel for a Taiwan bank and its major shareholders in a share swap transaction with a Taiwan local financial holding company.

  • Defended the vice president of a Hong Kong-based investment bank against a criminal investigation related to unlawful solicitation of financial products in Taiwan.

  • Assist one of the largest financial holding company in Taiwan to incorporate a joint venture on insurance business in China.
