Biography

Martín Barillas is an associate in the International Tax & Global Wealth Management practice in the Zurich office of Baker McKenzie. Prior to joining the Firm, Martín worked at a Big 4 accounting firm in Washington, D.C., where he advised global companies on the state and local tax aspects of their operations in the United States. Prior to that, Martín worked at a Latin American firm, where he acquired experience advising clients in M&A transactions and international trade and customs rules and regulations.

Apart from his corporate and tax experience, Martín also is experienced in international trade and customs rules and regulations.

Martín assists clients in interdisciplinary matters in both English and Spanish.

Practice Focus

Martin focuses on assisting individual and institutional clients with activities and assets in multiple jurisdictions, including the EU, EFTA countries, and the US.

He provides tax advice in matters related to US aspects of income and transfer tax planning as well as cross-border transactions. This includes tax advice in operations such as cross-border investments, real estate ventures, closely-held business matters, employee compensations structures, trusts and estate planning, as well as handling withholding and tax treaties. Additionally, Martín also advises clients in compliance matters associated with FATCA and the Common Reporting Standard.
