The data centre boom in Malaysia has stimulated the economy and boosted foreign direct investment. However, questions have been raised around the large consumption of electricity and water and the long term sustainability of the industry. This has led to the question of how to balance economic growth and sustainability.

In this piece, Kuala Lumpur Finance and Projects Partner Faez Abdul Razak suggests that rather than imposing tariffs or other limitations on data centre developers, a more equitable approach would be to require data centre operators to incorporate better efficiency and environmentally friendly measures into their operations with the aim of reducing their resource demands over the lifespan of the centre's operations. 

He also commented that nuclear power would be one area of advancement worth considering to diversify the country's energy mix.
