Global law firm Baker McKenzie is pleased to announce that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved the Firm’s near-term science-based emissions reduction targets (SBTs).
Baker McKenzie commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions 53.3% by 2030 from a 2019 base year. Baker McKenzie also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions 27.5% within the same timeframe.
The SBTi is a corporate climate action organization that mobilizes the private sector to play its part in combating the climate crisis, and develops standards, tools and guidance that allow organizations to set greenhouse gas emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global warming below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at the latest.
Alyssa Auberger, Chief Sustainability Officer at Baker McKenzie, commented: “In 2019, Baker McKenzie set Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction targets to focus its efforts and provide an objective against which to measure progress; setting near-term science-based emissions reductions targets across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 was a logical next step for us and our Firm’s commitment to do our part to reduce global warming. With 2024 being the hottest year on record, the need for organizations to focus on reducing emissions to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C is more important than ever. Our approved SBTs will serve as a roadmap for our emissions reduction efforts through 2030.”
Baker McKenzie’s near-term emissions reduction targets are part of its broader sustainability strategy, aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As an active participant of the UN Global Compact, the Firm reports its progress on its eight prioritized SDGs on a yearly basis, which reflects the holistic nature of its sustainability efforts and the impact the Firm makes through its internal efforts on emissions reduction and ID&E as well as its pro bono work, community involvement and client advice.
