In an economic environment of higher inflation, rising interest rates and costs of borrowing, softening consumer spending and supply-side constraints, the likelihood of financial distress seems ever greater. However, these challenges can create their own opportunities.
On 17 May 2023, Baker McKenzie and guest speakers from Deloitte, H.I.G. Capital, Houlihan Lokey and North Wall Capital held in-depth panel discussions on the impact of, and opportunities arising from, the headwinds affecting European economies.
The panels discussed the potential options available to lenders, acquirers, sponsors and/or debtors in a distressed or potentially distressed situation, taking into account the typical covenants included in debt documentation. The first panel covered alternatives for leveraged credits and distressed M&A opportunities; and the second panel focused on the distressed real estate finance and special situations opportunities.
